The Graphium chair, designed by Per Ploug, is a 3-legged chair that combines aesthetics, strength, and comfort. Its unique design is inspired by the butterfly genus Graphium, which is reflected in the shape of the backrest. Made from solid wood, with a veneered bent plywood backrest and upholstered seat, the Graphium chair excels in all criteria for a chair - it is aesthetically pleasing, strong, sturdy, light, and comfortable.
Before making the prototype chair, Per Ploug created a scaled model out of foamboard and photographed it to better understand the proportions of the piece. Once satisfied with the shape, he collaborated closely with a furniture maker to discuss the process of assembly, details, and visible joints. The design went through practical experimentation to ensure it was just right.
The Graphium chair's dimensions are W460mm x D510mm x H820mm, with a seat height of 450mm. Its visually interesting design invites users to try it, and its ergonomic shape provides a comfortable sitting position. The chair's center of gravity is towards the front, making it sturdy and stable. The curved backrest cradles the user, enhancing the overall comfort.
The Graphium chair project started in the summer of 2013, with the final product delivered in April 2014. Per Ploug's research for this design was based on iconic Danish chairs by designers such as Borge Mogensen and Hans J Wegner. He studied the comfort, seat and backrest angles, and proportions of these chairs to create a chair that expressed similar qualities and had an obvious relation to the Veizla Table.
The main challenges in designing the Graphium chair were determining the right height position of the backrest and shaping the seat. Through practical experimentation and fine-tuning, Per Ploug overcame these challenges to create a chair that is not only visually stunning but also comfortable and functional.
The Graphium Chair, with its unique design and attention to detail, is a modern classic in chair design. It complements the Veizla range while standing out on its own. Its combination of aesthetics, strength, and comfort makes it a desirable addition to any space.
